Scottsdale Event Caroling Photography at Freedom Inn

This is my second year photographing Christmas caroling at Freedom Inn with James Telich and friends. I had a great time last Sunday and thought I’d share some photos for those who follow this blog as well as those who attended this year’s event.

Santa Greets a guest

Last year Santa said some really nice things to me about my photography. He said I was famous in the North Pole, but this year Santa didn”t even talk to me. I wasn’t even sure if it was the same guy, he looked thinner. (Maybe it’s recession or the economy?!)

I felt like doing something, crazy or silly, like the guy below, but I held back…. Trying to maintain a professional demeanor.

Flowers are great, there’s always a lot of floral goodness, which is donated by somone. If you know, drop a comment at the bottom the the article and I’ll update this post w/ some credit and “link love” to them.

Sometimes other photography “geeks” like to know how photos are made….

On the photo above I bounced a Nikon Sb-800 into the ceiling (and slightly to the left) to bounce some nice light from a direction creating nice soft light which is not standard for “flash on camera” . I also was using a high ISO to capture some of the ambient light. The strobe was gelled with CTO (color temp orange) to balance for the tungsten light.

Some exposure settings:

Exposure:	0.013 sec (1/80)
Aperture:	f/4.5
Focal Length:	120 mm
ISO Speed:	1000

One can never go wrong with photos of cute children.

I nearly forgot, people came to sing, so here are some singers.

There was also some dancing. This was the mild dancing. I heard rumors that things go “crazy nuts”, then was told that I would get in trouble if I posted those photos.

Holiday Event Photos at Freedom Inn – Scottsdale

Last month I photograph some people who volunteer every year to help spread holiday cheer by visiting, caroling, and giving flowers to residents of an assisted living facility.

Practice makes Perfect!

Some girls were practicing singing “Silent Night”…. I’m sorry that I made fun of your singing abilities………
At least you were singing, and practice is great. You probably sound better than I do!

The event started out with a Bagpipe Processional:

Everyone marched down the hall and the party officially started.

It was great to see kids get into the singing… I think they’re singing about reindeer in this photo.

Elvis had a Blue Christmas and White Shoes????

Elvis show up, but he could only stay for 2 songs. Both songs were about a color…..I believe the colors were white and blue, yet Elvis wore red. I was slightly confused by this, but didn’t get a chance to ask him about this because we only chatted before he sang. He did tell me that many people pretend to be Elvis. We agreed that they are probably just Posers.

Santa then asked me to photograph him with some of his friends….

Santa also mumbled something about being a “big fan of ACME” and something about our work in the 90′s…. but it was a little hard to hear with the music and his mouth 1/2 full of cookies. I just nodded and smiled.

After much sining the event was over…. I believe there were more goodies and snacks afterwards, but I had an apointment with my wife and kids for hot chocolate down the street. Maybe next year I’ll bring the family? Thanks to Jim, those who donated snacks, flowers and all who donated their time to get out and put smiles on faces of those who don’t always get to spend as much time with their families. It’s things like this that help make a great community.

Holiday Event Party Photography – Phoenix, Arizona

Private Event Anniversary Party in Paradise Valley

This image was created at a private party in Paradise Valley Arizona. I was hired to provide photography for this backyard house party. The special occasion was a 25th wedding anniversary and the client asked George Abrams, their meeting planner to find a photographer, I was the guy George found to take care of the photo needs.

The event was fun and planned very well.

TWO sunpak 622 Strobes…
1) On the Right… 2/3′s down the length of the tables.
2) Camera left and maybe 20 ft “deep” into the photo

EXPOSURE(s) This image is actually a few exposures sandwiched together.
This is how the skyline is visible. The mountain is Camelback MT, in Phoenix.

Exposure range from 1/15th of a second to 20 seconds.

TPC Scottsdale hole – Arizona Golf Corporate Event Photography

We photographed a Corporate Golf Event Today at TPC – The Player’s Club in North Scottsdale, AZ. (Hole #16 Stadium Course)

Here’s an action shot….and yes, I "ate a little dirt" (the real reason photographers put UV filters on their expensive glass!

Sunpak 622 / full power on a medium stand Camera Left, Fired w/ a PW.
Optimized for color, vignette, etc in Adobe Lightroom then "acme Combo #2" (acme magic + AcmeGlam action) in photoshop.

Brian Shaler – ShalerJump – Arizona State fair action photography phoenix

An on location editorial portrait of a ShalerJump at the Arizona State fair on a Refocus Phoenix outing.

Brian Shaler is a “jumper” and was seen at the state fair a few weeks ago in Phoenix AZ.

After this photo was created I showed the image (on the camera LCD) to a worker at a food booth. She said, “What is he jumping off of” I said, “The ground”…. She was shocked. I guess this is why they call him a “Jumper”

Rumor on the Internet is that Brian Shaler may have a “Jump-off” (or Jump-a-thon) with Kent Nichols of “Ask a Ninja” at PodcampAZ this weekend.

Think –> Parkour + Verical Only + Spectators = JumpaThon Charity event

**Update**
—>There wasn’t enough notice to fully plan out the Charity jump, maybe next year?!

We’ll see if it happens! I think any wagers would go to a charity. This could be fun!
